Recycled Art Quilts – A Story of Transformation

I have wanted to recycle my old art quilts for a long time. They have all been cataloged, many of them have been shown at exhibitions, but have been hanging in a closet for years.
I then heard of painters going through their work periodically and paint over previous pieces. As I enjoy very much painting my own fabrics, I decided to give recycling by overpainting a try.
I started by overpainting the original quilt, then added layers of paint and layers of writing. I have been writing Morning Pages (Julia Cameron: The Artist’s Way) for many years. Some years ago I started to write them on fabric so I could incorporate these fabrics into my art quilts.
In the meantime, after the whole world has completely changed due to Covid-19, writing has become more and more important and powerful for me. I need to get those thoughts out of my head and down on fabric.
This was the start of a new series – Diary of a Pandemic.
Layers blend into each other, it’s like our lives right now: so much is blending into a very different past. The new look is different, but based on the old way.
I’m currently working on a new series – Forty Seven Years, based on the same principles.
